Ten Berge was the son of a gold and silversmith and trained by Pieter Plas from Alkmaar, who himself was a student of Jan van Ravenswaay. He painted landscapes and townscapes but a contemporary said of him, “there are a number of good works by his hand, but growing intemperance has had a harmful effect on his work”. His drawing of the Hunnebed in Noord-Sleen he entitled ‘an hour spent east of Zweeloo’. There are other works done in this area that are known to be by his hand.
