David Artz, Den Haag, 1837 - 1890

Adolphe Artz who knew Israëls from the national academy in Amsterdam and was one of the artists who was inspired by Israëls to visit Drenthe. Where Israëls was looking for the dramatic art of life, Artz was looking for simplicity and peacefulness. His letters showed at once what the problems were with this move towards simplicity. The solitude of the farmers was too much to bear for some of them. Therefor many artists travelled together, but Artz was alone and was pleased that he could visit Jozef Israëls’ family in Groningen for social contact.
