Pieter ter Meulen also painted sheep from in front and from behind, certainly inspired by Anton Mauve, who lived in The Hague at the same time as he did. Ter Meulen painted on the Veluwe and in Drenthe and identification of the type of sheep will possibly help to determine whether the work was done in Drenthe or on the Veluwe.
When Vincent van Gogh came to Zweeloo in November 1883 to visit Liebermann, he wrote to his brother that “Termeulen and Jules Bakhuijzen” had also been in Zweeloo. Julius Bakhuysen lived in The Hague too and, like ter Meulen, served his apprenticeship with Bakhuysen, so perhaps they travelled together.
