Hendrik de Groot

Kunstschilder Hendrik de Groot

Hendrik de Groot, Havelte, 1872 - 1967

After studying chemistry and Dutch, Hendrik de Groot eventually became a pastor in Emmen, where he soon started to paint the church with ‘protestant decorative art’. He coined this term to parry any accusations of a return to Roman Catholic times. After De Groot was long gone, the church was later stripped of its decoration. De Groot continued to paint until his death, leaving behind a huge oeuvre.
