Born in Rotterdam, Hermannus van Oosterzee attended the Art Academy of the same city. Descriptions like ‘poet with a brush’ and ‘painter in vaporous hues’ reflect how he tried to capture a landscape that was dreamy and tranquil. He preferred to paint early in the morning or later the day, when the weather was misty or rainy. He sought the serenity of the heath or the low-lying mist hanging over the fields. Not a great deal is known about the life and work of this painter.
