His training as a drawing teacher at teacher training college (Rijksnormaalschool) was interrupted by the war. From 1948 he had a studio at the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum which thus provided him with the opportunity to study the methods of the Old Masters. This led to a job in the museum’s conservation studio.
Besides his work in the conservation studio he often also painted in the style of the Old Masters which, for him, was all about further refining their techniques. The greater part of his work is made up of still lifes.
