Jannes de Vries

Jannes de Vries, Meppel, 1901 - 1986

Jannes de Vries is well-known as an expressionistic painter in the Grongingen Ploeg movement but his roots lay in Drenthe. Born in Meppel and with a summer house in Hooghalen, his colour palette initially leaned more towards the rather subdued hues of the Drenthe landscape and skies. Later in his life he showed himself to be a real De Ploeg painter, using the strong colours that are so typical of Groningen expressionism. He colourfully reproduced the Oud Aalden 8 farmhouse immortalised by so many painters.
