Painter, pencil, pen and ink artist, watercolourist and painter of gouaches, Johan van Bijsterveld had no formal training but did take drawing lessons. On holiday trips through Drenthe he often stopped to make a quick sketch of the landscape. He was well known for his skies, often referred to as ‘Bijsterveld skies’. The fact that he was self-taught did not prevent his work from being appreciated: he was a member of the artists’ societies in Amersfoort and Hilversum, sat on the Dutch Artists’ Subsidy (BKR) committee for the Province of Utrecht and wrote art reviews.
