Jo Metelerkamp came from an artistic family. She trained as a drawing instructor, although it is unknown whether she ever gave any drawing lessons. She came from a well-to-do family and may not have had to work for a living. She was careless about her work, never taking the trouble to conserve it properly, and never liked to show it to others. From the works she left behind it is clear that she did a lot in Drenthe but we only know that because a friend took the trouble to preserve her work. There is also a photo of Jo Metelerkamp sitting drawing in Hotel Bussemaker in Exloo surrounded by the children of the village.
