Like Berend Hoving, Van Oorschot trained as a house painter and later decided to become a free artist instead. Van Oorschot, however, had been able to make this switch because his employer had trained [him] as a church painter. He learned from his employer how to work with binders and pigments for marble painting and so acquired a taste for free painting. Landscapes reminiscent of The Hague School and colourful flower still lifes are among the highlights of his work.
